Seeing Red: Exploring the Beauty and Creativity of Red Scale Film Photography

Check this out: You load your camera with a roll, but instead of the usual way, you flip it upside-down and backwards. This process is done in a dark place, of course, and can be laborious, but it yields amusing results. Why, you ask? Well, this clever trick means that the light passes through the red layer of the film first, creating a funky color shift. Suddenly, red and orange tones pop while blues and greens take a back seat. The result? A vintage vibe or a surreal look, depending on your subject and lighting. It's like having a secret weapon for your artistic and experimental photography. Try it out by reversing and re-rolling traditional color negative film, or by grabbing some pre-manufactured red scale film.
Having plenty of red scale projects, I found it difficult to choose photos to post. I decided on photos from my Australia trip (I realize a lot was shot there, but other locations to come!) with jellyfish about three times bigger than my hand to double exposures. I hope this inspired you to try something a little different and to get ready to take your photos to the next level!
